Getting married at TOM Almhütte

TOM Almhütte sits above Maria Alm in Salzburg’s Hochkönig region, surrounded by the Austrian Alps.

Unlike a traditional hotel wedding venue, the mountain is already part of the experience.

Guests travel up from Maria Alm and arrive at a modern alpine hut with open views across the surrounding landscape.

The venue offers spaces for both the ceremony and celebration, including an outdoor forest terrace for ceremonies and several indoor and outdoor areas for dinner and the party. TOM also works with accommodation down in Maria Alm, making it possible to turn the wedding into more than a single-day event.

For couples bringing guests to Austria from abroad, that combination makes a lot of sense.

Everyone can stay around Maria Alm, spend several days together and experience the mountains without the wedding day itself becoming logistically complicated.

A mountain ceremony without leaving the celebration

One thing I particularly like about venues like TOM Almhütte is that you don’t have to disappear for hours to create photographs or film footage that looks like the Austrian Alps.

You’re already there.

The ceremony can take place outside against the mountain landscape, while the terrace, forests and surrounding area give us plenty of options for a short couple session later in the day. The venue even highlights the nearby Prinzensee as an option for sunset portraits.

For me, that is the ideal situation.

I’d much rather take you away for ten or fifteen relaxed minutes and then send you back to your friends than turn an hour of your wedding into a photoshoot.

The landscape should be part of the day.

Not the reason you miss it.

Why Maria Alm works for a destination wedding

Maria Alm is one of those places that immediately feels Austrian without feeling isolated.

The village sits within the Hochkönig region, surrounded by mountains and alpine scenery, with everything from hotels and restaurants to mountain huts concentrated around the area.

The regional tourism organisation specifically positions Hochkönig for mountain weddings, with venues ranging from alpine huts to hotels and mountain ceremony locations.

That makes it particularly interesting when your guests are travelling internationally.

Instead of asking everyone to fly to Austria for a single afternoon, you can build an entire weekend around the wedding.

A relaxed evening together before the wedding.

The wedding itself somewhere in the mountains.

Breakfast or brunch the following morning.

Maybe hiking, exploring Salzburg or simply spending another day together afterwards.

And suddenly the wedding becomes part of a much bigger experience.

Turning one wedding day into a wedding weekend

TOM Almhütte itself already leans into this idea.

Its current wedding concept combines accommodation in Maria Alm with the possibility of a get-together before the wedding, the celebration at TOM and brunch afterwards.

For a destination wedding, I think that is where things become particularly interesting.

Because some of the best material for a wedding film often happens outside the actual ceremony.

Your closest friends meeting for drinks the evening before.

Parents talking when nothing formal is happening.

Everyone slowly arriving from different countries.

The calm morning after a very long night.

Those moments give me much more context for who you are than another ten minutes of posing somewhere with a mountain behind you.

Documentary wedding films in the Austrian Alps

My approach to weddings is fairly simple.

I don’t want to turn your wedding into a film production.

Most of the time, I’m observing rather than directing.

I’m looking for the things happening between the obvious moments: reactions during speeches, conversations outside, nervous energy before the ceremony, people laughing when they think nobody is filming.

Beautiful landscapes obviously matter — especially somewhere like Maria Alm.

But they aren’t the story.

The people are.

The mountains just happen to be a pretty incredible place to put them.

Looking for the right vendors for your wedding at Tom Almhütte?

I think this wedding went down flawless and I loved every minute of it.

But this is due to the amazing people being involved.
