Wedding Film | Austrian Alps - Steinbockalm Hochkönig
Surrounded by the Austrian Alps at Steinbockalm Hochkönig, this wedding day felt calm, honest, and deeply connected. Even with the weather constantly threatening to turn. But somehow, that made it even more beautiful.
Story wise, this could be a movie…
Both of them had set out to hike the Großglockner. But, once again, the weather had other plans. What started with frustration over not reaching their individual goal turned into something far more meaningful: they found each other. So celebrating their wedding in the mountains felt more than fitting. What stayed with me most were their vows. They had so much to say to each other, straight from the heart, and that became the soul of this film. That’s also why this wedding film takes its time. Some stories simply need a little more space to breathe.
Their vows became the heart of this film
I’ve heard a lot of wedding vows over the years.
These were some of the sweetest I’ve ever filmed.
And probably some of the longest.
They had a lot to say to each other — stories, memories and things that clearly mattered far more than simply getting through a ceremony.
So I didn’t want to cut them down just because a wedding film is “supposed” to have a certain length.
Instead, the film slowed down.
I gave their words room and built the images around them.
That meant using almost everything the day had given me and letting certain moments stay on screen longer than I normally would.
And I think that’s exactly why this film feels the way it does.
Some stories simply need a little more space to breathe.
Getting married at Steinbock Alm
Steinbock Alm sits high above Hinterthal in the Hochkönig region of Salzburger Land, surrounded by alpine meadows and the Hochkönig massif.
Getting there is already part of the experience.
Rather than arriving at another conventional event venue, guests travel up into the mountains before spending the rest of the celebration there.
The venue has its own small mountain chapel for ceremonies as well as terraces and indoor spaces overlooking the surrounding landscape.
That makes it possible for the ceremony, reception, dinner and party to happen in the same place without constantly moving guests between locations.
For a mountain wedding, that’s a big advantage.
A mountain wedding doesn't need perfect weather
Mountain weather changes quickly.
This wedding was a pretty good reminder of that.
Clouds moved through the Hochkönig throughout the day and there were plenty of moments where it looked like the weather was about to completely turn.
But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Some of my favourite mountain wedding footage happens when the landscape isn’t perfectly blue and sunny.
Clouds move through the valleys.
The light changes constantly.
Mountains disappear and reappear.
Wind starts moving dresses, trees and everything around you.
It makes the place feel alive.
I’d never recommend choosing an alpine wedding because you’re expecting one exact version of the mountains.
Choose it because you’re happy to let the mountains be part of the day — whatever they decide to do.
Why Hochkönig works so well for a mountain wedding
The Hochkönig region is particularly good for weddings because you’re surrounded by genuinely dramatic alpine scenery without having to build an overly complicated wedding day around it.
Places such as Maria Alm and Hinterthal give guests somewhere to stay in the valley, while mountain venues sit above them.
The region itself has several alpine wedding venues, chapels and mountain huts, which is why Hochkönig has become one of the areas where I find myself filming repeatedly.
And visually, every wedding up here can still feel completely different.
Bright summer evenings. Low clouds moving through the mountains. Autumn colour. Snow on the higher peaks.
You don’t really need to manufacture a backdrop.
You’re already standing in it.
We have been in this area plenty of times now and have been lucky enough to film weddings at some of the best and most sought wedding venues in the Austrian Alps. From the beautiful and relaxed Jufenalm to the TOM Almhütte, we love documenting weddings here.

Wedding films at Hochkönig and in the Austrian Alps
We document weddings, elopements and multi-day celebrations throughout the Austrian Alps, with much of our work taking place around Tyrol, Salzburg and the Hochkönig region.
The mountains are a big part of what draws us to these weddings.
But they’re never the whole story.
What matters more is finding the people, words and moments that make one wedding impossible to confuse with another.
